If there is something that fills the walls of a house with life, it is the stories it carries. When remodeling an old property, many of us embrace not just a renovation project, but a unique opportunity to give voice to the past and create an harmonious future. In this article, we will show you how we transform a space with potential, without discarding old furniture, which had a lot of emotional value for our customers.
Is it worth preserving the soul of the house?
The art of remodel an old house it resides in finding the balance between preserving the past and introducing modern elements. Opting to maintain original architectural elements such as doors and windows, not only preserves the soul of the house but also adds a touch of authenticity. Imagine the beauty of a living room with an ornate 19th-century ceiling, contrasting with carefully chosen contemporary furniture?
Another important factor to consider in a remodelling project is the structural elements that cannot be eliminated, such as beams and pillars, for example. In this case, it is best to incorporate them into the project and create solutions so that they blend harmoniously with the new interior design.
Not everything is discarded.
Many times, our homes are filled with elements that carry not only a practical function but also an emotional weight. They are inheritances from past generations, gifts from loved ones, or simply pieces that witnessed special moments in our lives. As an architect, I understand the importance of these objects and seek to integrate them harmoniously into CURO’s projects.
By taking advantage of the existing furniture, we are building an architectural narrative that goes beyond aesthetics. We are preserving and highlighting the stories that these objects carry, transforming spaces into emotional memories.
Integrating existing elements can be challenging, but it is also a unique opportunity for innovation and creativity. Each piece can become the starting point for designing a space, influencing the color palette, arrangement of elements, and even spatial architecture.
But! To make the most of antique furniture, it is necessary:
- Make sure that the furniture is in good condition to be incorporated into the new design.
- Consider small changes to adapt the furniture to the style of the new project.
- Harmonize the design of the environment so that all the pieces integrate naturally and respect the overall aesthetics of the project..
In architecture, we value not only the physical spaces but also the emotional experience they provide.
The renovation of the “Casa Nunes” apartmentwith the use of existing furniture
Recently, we completed a renovation project for an apartment located in the center of Águeda.
The first challenge was to work with such an extensive program within such a small space. Therefore, every nook and cranny was utilized to meet the clients' needs. Subsequently, as we approached each area individually, we realized there were multiple layers of materials upon materials. One such example was the kitchen, with different types of tiles. The main consideration we had to bear in mind was the existing structural beam that couldn't be removed. We didn't want this beam to hinder the project or its aesthetics. The solution was to incorporate it into the design and paint it the color of the furniture, bringing unity and integration.
In the living room, the challenge was to expand the space by removing a wall, which was the old entrance hall, and transform the room into a hybrid space integrated with the kitchen. Hence, the idea of working with furniture with rounded shapes emerged, creating a harmonious passage between environments.
Lastly, it was necessary to consider the inclusion of a sideboard that has been in the family for several generations. Therefore, we opted to use cane weaving, cleverly transitioning between a vintage style and a modern atmosphere. This was the upclycling furniture that we had to consider for this project.
